METROPLAST

Metropolitan Agenda for Microplastic Pollution Reduction

Core Focus

METROPLAST develops a metropolitan action plan to reduce microplastics and urban pollutants entering coastal and stormwater systems across the 61 municipalities in Gdańsk-Gdynia-Sopot. Combining data analysis, stakeholder consultation and mapping, the project prepares practical, standardised measures for local authorities. Key outputs include a Microplastics Reduction Agenda and an interactive hotspot map.

Challenge

The metropolitan area faces growing microplastic pollution from urban, transport and stormwater sources, compounded by two large ports and heavy traffic. There is no coherent monitoring system, no comparable data and no unified metropolitan policy covering monitoring, hotspot mapping, stormwater standards and port and road procedures. Responsibilities are fragmented across local governments.

Key Activities

  • Analyse data and diagnose the microplastics problem.
  • Run workshops and consultations with local governments.
  • Develop the Agenda and a catalogue of actions.
  • Validate outputs through inter-institutional consultation.
  • Disseminate and prepare for implementation.

Communities Engaged

  • Waterfront cities & regional authorities
  • Conservation & environmental protection
  • River basin & inland water communities
  • Citizen science & community education
  • Blue tech & digital innovation
