DITRA

Daugava Infrastructure Transition Pathways

Core Focus

DITRA assesses Latvia's readiness for evidence-based decisions on the future of the Daugava hydropower cascade. Combining stakeholder engagement, public surveys, knowledge-gap analysis and scenario development, the project will generate the governance and knowledge foundations needed for future river restoration discussions.

Challenge

Hardangerfjord is a low-salinity system under nutrient pressure, with salmon farming as the dominant cause and a eutrophication risk if production grows. The sector is at a standstill after the County Governor rejected new applications. Farmers want documented effects from biostimulants, and local low-trophic knowledge is limited.

Key Activities

  • Assess biomass volumes, nutrient content and current disposal practices.
  • Map collection logistics and pilot sites with the municipalities.
  • Run collection campaigns and sort litter from biomass.
  • Conduct composting, contamination and salinity trials and develop soil improvers.
  • Deliver municipal workshops, guidelines and a replication toolkit

Communities Engaged

  • Waterfront cities & regional authorities
  • Citizen science & community education
